Bullmastiffs - General Information

Bullmastiffs are said to be gentle, devoted dogs. They are quiet and easy-going, and will hardly ever bark unless they have a good reason for it. The dog's short coat, which is usually brindle, red, or fawn requires little grooming. In terms of exercise the Bullmastiff is an excellent dog to keep. It will do well with one or two long walks a day. A leash will not cause it any discomfort.

Height: Bullmastiffs stand at the shoulder about 25-27 inches high. Females, as a rule, are a little bit smaller.
Weight: 110-130 pounds with females weighing about 10 pounds less.

Other Name: Gamekeeper's Nightdog The Bullmastiff's ancestors, the Bulldog and the Mastiff, contributed much to its appearance, physical characteristics, and personality. Aiming for perfect protection qualities, Mosley S. E. produced a massive breed with a good sense of smell. Bullmastiffs were agile enough to quickly reach for a poacher and hold his victim until a gamekeeper ceased the criminal.

The Bullmastiff originated in 1791. The Kennel Club of the UK gave the breed the first recognition in 1924. The Bullmastiff is called a man-made breed created from 60 percent Mastiff and 40 percent Bulldog. Bullmastiffs were originally bred for protection of gamekeepers against poachers.
