Bull Mastiff Dog
The Bull Mastiff Dog is a large, tough, but intelligent and people-oriented companion. Bred initially to guard estate lands against poachers, these dogs have retained a strong guarding instinct and self-assured temperament. Bull Mastiffs originated in the 1800s as a cross between the Olde English Bulldogge and the English Mastiff. The dog was supposed to possess the speed and agility of the Bulldog and the restraint and intelligence of the Mastiff. The Bull Mastiff’s basic mission was catching and detaining poachers without harming them.
Bull Mastiff Dogs of today are reliable and trustworthy companions. They are protective and therefore aloof with strangers, but they never attack without motivation. Their attitude toward strangers largely depends on the master’s reaction to each particular visitor. Bull Mastiffs are good with children, but they are not recommended for families with toddlers because of their size. They should not be left around young kids without supervision. Well socialized Bull Mastiffs are good with other animals in the house.
The Bull Mastiff stands 23-27 inches high at the withers. These dogs have a smooth and short coat, which occurs in different shades of fawn, red and brindle. In the 1800s, brindle was the only acceptable color. All Bull Mastiffs should have black markings around the eyes and around the nose. These dogs have strong jaws, closing in a level or scissors bite. The head is broad, and the muzzle is short and wrinkled. Bull Mastiff Dogs have V-shaped ears, which are placed widely apart. The eyes are medium-sized and dark.
Bull Mastiff Dogs are well accustomed to indoor life, so they do not require a large yard. However, they should not be locked inside the house all the time, as they appreciate various open air activities. Bull Mastiffs need moderate physical exercise. These dogs are prone to cold and overheating, so they should not be exposed to temperature extremes.
Bull Mastiffs often drool and snore. Their muzzle requires daily care, and wrinkles should be cleaned on a regular basis. These dogs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, eye problems (PRA, entropion and ectropion), bloat and malignant tumors. They are also prone to excessive weight. You must provide a balanced ratio and sufficient exercise for your Bull Mastiff Dog unless you want him to gain weight.
