Mastiff Breeders

Since the very inception of the breed, Mastiff Breeders have strove to maintain the good looks and the stamina in their dogs. Actually, there are several types of Mastiffs, representing or bearing a direct relation to the Molosser group of dogs: the English Mastiff, the American Mastiff, the Bullmastiff (a cross between the English Mastiff and the Olde English Bulldogge), the Spanish Mastiff, the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Tibetan Mastiff, the Pug, the Cane Corso, and the Dogue de Bordeaux.

Mastiffs are believed to have originated in the Orient. The Pug is the smallest Mastiff-type dog, originating in China. The English mastiff is the largest dog in the group. Mastiff Breeders lay a very strict emphasis on their dog’s intelligence, integrity, determination and guarding abilities. All Mastiff-type dogs are notably protective around their loved ones and property, and many have been widely used in blood sports throughout history. Today, with such sports being illegal, these dogs are mostly valuable as companions and are intended for guarding and various services.

The English Mastiff is but the brightest representative of the Molosser group. He has contributed his gene to many existing breeds of dogs, such as English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pit Bull Terriers, etc. All of these breeds have inherited much of the dog’s valor, strength, endurance and stamina. Today’s Mastiffs are not supposed to be vicious. Mastiff Breeders cultivate in their dogs a sense of dignity and tact. Mastiffs represent a remarkable combination of strength and protectiveness with docility and conviviality. Although they are naturally aloof with strangers, they never attack without provocation. Mastiffs are good with children, but they are not usually recommended for families with toddlers because of their size.

English Mastiffs are large and sturdy dogs, featuring a massive head with a dark and wrinkled muzzle, deep and broad chest and powerful fore- and hindquarters. Mastiffs have a short coat, which comes in fawn, apricot and brindle. There must be black markings on the nose, ears and around the eyes. The eyes should be dark. Facial expression should be intense and self-assured, but not predatory or vicious. Mastiffs require specific nutrition, handling, training and socialization. Maintenance is usually costly due to the dog’s size. Most Mastiff Breeders do not usually recommend this breed for young dog lovers, because owning a Mastiff requires a great deal or experience, devotion and responsibility.
